The marquise cut is an elongated, boat-shaped brilliant with two pointed ends. Legend attributes its origin to King Louis XV, who commissioned a diamond shaped like the lips of the Marquise de Pompadour. Its elongated form has one of the largest face-up areas of any diamond shape, making it appear larger than its actual carat weight.

Marquise diamonds offer exceptional perceived value because they appear significantly larger per carat. However, their pointed tips require protective V-prong settings, and the bow-tie effect (a dark shadow across the center) must be minimized through expert cutting.
