Definition
Clarity grades measure the presence and visibility of internal characteristics (inclusions) and surface irregularities (blemishes) in a diamond under 10x magnification. The GIA clarity scale ranges from Flawless (FL) to Included (I3): FL, IF, VVS1, VVS2, VS1, VS2, SI1, SI2, I1, I2, I3. Most inclusions are invisible to the naked eye at VS2 and above, creating the concept of 'eye-clean' diamonds.
Why it matters in ring design
Understanding clarity allows jewelers to guide clients toward the best value. An 'eye-clean' SI1 diamond can save clients 20–40% compared to a VS1 of the same size and cut, with no visible difference to the naked eye. This expertise builds client trust and repeat business.
