Color Grade
A scale from D (colorless) to Z (light yellow) grading how much color tint is present in a white diamond.
Definition
Diamond color grading evaluates the absence of color in white diamonds on a scale from D (completely colorless) to Z (light yellow or brown tint). The GIA scale begins at D because earlier grading systems used A, B, C inconsistently. Color differences between adjacent grades are extremely subtle and typically visible only under controlled lighting conditions. Fancy colored diamonds (vivid yellows, pinks, blues) use a separate grading system.
Why It Matters for Ring Design
Color is the second most impactful factor on diamond pricing after carat weight. Most clients cannot distinguish between D-F (colorless) and G-H (near-colorless) grades, making G-H diamonds an excellent value recommendation. Yellow and rose gold settings also mask slight color tint, allowing lower color grades.
